Mole Mavens Provide On-Site Mole Checks at June 21 Swim Across America - Fairfield County Open Water Swim

On Saturday, June 21, hundreds of swimmers and volunteers will be gathering on the shore of Long Island Sound to dive in and make waves to fight cancer at the 19th annual Swim Across America - Fairfield County open water swim, taking place in Stamford, Connecticut. For the fourth year in a row, participants and spectators, in addition to spending the morning swimming and cheering, will have the opportunity to have a quick visit with the Mole Mavens — a group of physicians from The Dermatology Center of Stamford who will be on-site providing affordable $20 mole checks in an effort to help identify any instances of skin cancer.

The Mole Mavens are made up a team of board-certified dermatologists from The Dermatology Center of Stamford and include Debra Pruzan-Clain, MD, Severine Chavel, MD, Rebecca Hall, MD, and Elizabeth Marsh, MD, who are volunteering their time at the Swim to add a fun and easy way to get a quick skin cancer check.

“We’re proud to bring the Mole Mavens back to Swim Across America for a fourth year,” said Dr. Debra Pruzan-Clain with The Dermatology Center of Stamford. “Swim Across America - Fairfield County is a wonderful fun family event that is all about raising money for cancer research. Part of staying healthy and cancer-free is having regular skin check-ups and mole checks. By offering a convenient $20 mole check right at the swim, we’re able to help the Swim community and its supporters take preventive steps to protect their skin health, while supporting critical cancer research.”

Each participant can have a mole evaluated by a dermatologist right at the swim — for $20 a mole. If a mole appears suspicious, the patient will receive follow-up recommendations to take to their primary care physician or dermatologist. The Mole Mavens table will also provide free sunscreen samples and educational materials about skin cancer prevention and sun safety.

The 19th annual Swim Across America – Fairfield County Open Water Swim will take place on Saturday, June 21, at Stamford’s Dolphin Cove, with hundreds of swimmers, volunteers and supporters expected to attend. Swim options include half-mile, 1.5-mile and 3-mile distances, as well as a fun Kids’ Splash for children 11 and under. The swim has raised more than $7.4 million to date for cancer research and clinical trials and supports its local Stamford-based beneficiary Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy.

Nationally, Swim Across America holds swims from Nantucket to under the Golden Gate Bridge and has raised more than $100 million to fight cancer, including funding the FDA approved immunotherapy treatments Keytruda, Opdivo, Tecentriq and Yervoy, as well as funding the recent breakthrough clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering showing success at treating certain types of cancer with immunotherapy alone. Swim Across America also recently announced two first of its kind gene editing innovation grants, awarded to Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute that supports the work of novel gene and base editing techniques used in advanced cancer research, including targeted therapies, immunotherapies and cellular therapies, with the hope that these grants accelerate better, safer and more effective treatments.
