Police Charge Man With Sexual Assault in Stamford Apartment Complex
Stamford Police say the suspect followed the victim from an apartment complex parking garage into an elevator, where the assault took place.

It was what is any woman’s nightmare… being followed through a parking garage into an elevator by a stranger, and one Stamford woman took matters into her own hands and now a suspect is in custody, charged with sexual assault.
Stamford Police say that on Monday May 3, detectives arrested 21-year-old Tyub Mohammed, of 36 Stephen St., Stamford, on charges of third-degree sexual assault and third-degree assault for his involvement in an incident that occurred on April 24 in an apartment complex on the city’s West side.
The 34-year-old female was arriving home to her apartment complex about 12:30 a.m. April 24 and parked her vehicle in the parking garage of the complex. She was quickly approached by a Hispanic or Middle Eastern looking male in his early 20’s, according to police.

“The suspect followed the victim into the vestibule area where he attempted to talk to her. As the elevator door opened he thrusted himself upon her and physically attempted to kiss her. As he was doing this he groped her genital area and was making inappropriate comments to her. In the midst of the incident he bit her lip and caused an injury to the victim. The victim then forcibly pushed him off her and forced him out of the vestibule where he departed the area,” Stamford Police said in a statement.
Stamford detectives bureau were able to secure a surveillance tape of the incident and using a still photo from the tape, distributed it to the patrol division. “Within a few hours we had numerous officers notify us that they are familiar with the suspect, later identified as Tyub Mohammed, due to the fact that he works at a local establishment,” police said.

Police said the tape corroborated the victim’s account and adds another disturbing factor. “As investigators were reviewing all angles of the tape you could see the suspect, identified as Mohammed, watching the victim arrive home. He then lies in wait for the victim to exit her car and watches as she proceeds to the vestibule. Seeing that she is alone and a female we believe that he decides to make a move to sexually assault the victim. Luckily, the victim fights back or otherwise this could have been a different outcome,” police said.
Investigators located Mohammed who he “placed himself at the complex at the time of the incident and also made some admissions to the sexual assault. With the information acquired we applied and were granted an arrest warrant,” police said.
On Monday, Mohammed was arrested and being held on a $250,000 court set bond.
Police said the incident is an example that “all persons should be aware of their surroundings when arriving home alone in setting as similar as this incident. Also, if one is confronted it is advisable to call for help, have a cell phone ready to be used and to notify the Police immediately after the incident occurs.”
“Sgt. DiCarlo, Officers Rodriguez, Gonzalez and Boeger should be commended for their quick diligent actions on this investigation while also showing dignity and compassion to the victim,” police also said.
