Sunny Skies Forecast for Saturday’s Swim Across America – Fairfield County

Swimmers, families, and supporters from across Fairfield County are getting ready to dive in this Saturday, June 21, for the 19th annual Swim Across America – Fairfield County open water swim at 96 Cummings Point Road in Stamford, Connecticut. With sunny skies in the forecast and a fun morning of activities, it's not too late to support the cause by donating or simply coming by to cheer on the swimmers who are making waves to fight cancer. On-site registration Saturday morning is also available from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. The swim starts promptly at 7:30 a.m. Learn more, donate or get directions at swimacrossamerica.org/fc.

This inspiring event brings together more than 400 swimmers and volunteers for a cause that touches nearly everyone. Participants will swim ½-mile, 1.5-miles, or 3-miles along the beautiful Stamford/Old Greenwich shoreline — all to support innovative cancer research funded through Swim Across America’s local beneficiary, Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT).

Families and kids will love the special Kids’ Splash, open to children 11 and under, the Kids’ Splash is a fun splash or swim a short distance from shore to a giant inflated pink flamingo. Arts and crafts, face painting, balloon artists, and more are also at the event to entertain the kids. Also NEW this year is a special appearance by Dash the Dolphin, Swim Across America’s brand-new mascot, ready for photos and high-fives.

Among those participating are incredible individuals with moving personal stories — from childhood cancer fighters like six-year-old “Queen Willa,” to survivors like event director Nancy Carr, who is bravely leading this year’s swim while undergoing her own treatment. Cancer survivor Chris White will be the morning’s inspirational speaker, sharing how innovative cancer cell therapy saved his life after undergoing numerous years of treatment and thankfully getting a last chance with brand new science before he thought he would have to live his remaining days in hospice.

Swimmers Peter Carlson, Greg Sedlock, and 11-year-old Shep Jennings are currently some of the top individuals fundraisers and are swimming to honor loved ones through every stroke — proving that whether you’re young, seasoned, fast, or just floating, every effort counts.

• Get a $20 mole check at the swim! The Mole Mavens, dermatologists from the Dermatology Center of Stamford, will be back by popular demand doing on-site easy skin cancer checks with proceeds supporting Swim Across America.
• COBS Bread will be making its famous bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwiches to fuel up the swimmers, volunteers and spectators.
• Coffee for Good will also be on-site with its delicious coffee.
• Sweet Blue Swim Academy is sponsoring the water hydration station.
• Ivy Rehab Physical Therapy will also be at the swim to keep the swimmers (and spectators) limber and feeling good.

Founded in 1987 by Darien, Connecticut, resident Matt Vossler, Swim Across America nationally has raised more than $100 million for cancer research, funding transformative trials that have led to FDA-approved immunotherapy cancer medications Keytruda, Opdivo, Yervoy and Tecentriq. The organization has also supported Memorial Sloan Kettering’s landmark trials including the recent Phase II clinical trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine showing an 80% success rate treating MMRd cancers with immunotherapy alone. Swim Across America also recently awarded the first-of-their-kind gene editing innovation grants using Crispr to Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to advance safer, more effective targeted treatments.
