Shippan Fire Settlement Shrouded in Mystery for Now

The fire killed three children and two adults.

STAMFORD, CT — Details on the settlement between the city and the estate of three girls killed in the fire remain scant and may be that way down the line.A joint statement was released yesterday that said a settlement was reached for an undisclosed amount plus $250,000 would be given to charity in the names of Lily, Grace and Sarah Badger.

Madonna Badger sued the city in federal court and the case was settled last month, according to the Stamford Advocate. A third lawsuit was filed on behalf of Pauline and Lomer Johnson, Madonna Badger's parents who were killed in the blaze, but the status of that case is unknown. It is possible the final details of the settlement are being worked out, according to the Advocate, a confidentiality clause may be included, which typically is followed by Freedom of Information complaints from the press due to taxpayer money being affected.

The city was sued by Matthew Badger after the house was demolished and material carted away just a few days after the fire. Badger argued in his filing that it prevented a third-party investigation into the cause of the blaze.
