My "Around the House" Tip of the Day for Thursday January 18, 2024:
Ice skating can be fun on a pond that's thoroughly frozen, or a rink, but not necessarily on a driveway or walks around your home. For years we used rock salt to help melt the stuff but then we noticed rock salt (sodium chloride) would actually eat away at the concrete. No one likes their walks and steps to look like cottage cheese. There are new chemical ice melters that are safer for concrete, but some are not friendly to pets and can irritate your dog or cats paws. If you buy this please read the label. Playground or beach sand won't melt the ice, but will give you some traction and reduce the slipperiness. I keep a bucket of sand around for this time of the year. The clean-up is messier but environmentally less of an issue and your pets won't complain.
