July 20th marked the first day of construction and no time was wasted by the talented crew of our awarded bid company Douglas P. Fleming, LLC of Chaplin, CT!
Doug is owner of a service disabled, veteran owned small business. We are most pleased to be working with Doug and his crew that includes many veterans. – www.dpf-lic.com

Last week trucks removed all the temporary crushed stone on the walkway and prepared the entire area with base material for the permanent brick pavers. This week the installation of concrete pavers began and it is a very handsome design, as you will see. The crew also dug holes for foundations for each sponsored bench that will soon be installed along the outer border of hero trees in the Memorial.

A stately Entrance Plaza and a grand Flag Ceremonial Plaza will be part of the new design this summer.

The 50’ diameter, paved Flag Plaza will be a fitting place for future ceremonies and events. The space in front of the flagpoles is the location for a magnificent, custom, feature sculpture designed by Artist Andrew Chernak who also created the Gold Star Mothers statue that is located in Waterbury City Hall. The sculpture is being created now, will be delivered and installed next year and will be unveiled at a formal Dedication Ceremony planned for September 2016.

Engraved brick pavers that so many wonderful supporters have purchased will be placed in the two walkways connecting the Flag Ceremonial Plaza from the main walkway.

A new and stately Entrance Plaza will feature an arc design with pillars that support an overhead sign leading into the Memorial. Each pillar will have appropriate plaques on each face. The entire area will be brick paved and will include attractive landscaping features.

Finally, a unique brick star design will be repeated along the straight part of the walkway, parallel to the park road, which will feature Donor Recognition. Flower gardens and other landscaping will be added to complete the Memorial design.

The Executive Committee has been working hard since last fall to finalize plans and designs for Phase Two of construction. Visits to brickyards, memorial companies, sign and graphic businesses, and memorial areas have helped to provide ideas and cost estimates. Hard work and research has gone into choosing appropriate and fitting messages that will be installed on plaques in the Entrance Plaza. We are very proud of the chosen design elements for the Memorial. Much thought and care has gone into decision-making.

So what’s missing? Due to budget constraints, we are not able, at this time, to complete construction of the entire Memorial design. The Entrance Plaza will be missing four handsome, stone-faced posts with messages on either side of the entrance pillars. The Flag Ceremonial Plaza will be missing a 90’ curved, 18” tall sitting wall that was designed to have a famous quote engraved along the face of the wall that will pay tribute to all veterans. (Footings will be installed for these elements this summer so they can be added at a future time.)

Our committee members are very resourceful and will pursue every avenue possible to complete the Memorial design in time for Dedication in 2016.

How can you help? Monetary donations continue to be needed and always appreciated. Perhaps you know someone who may be willing to assist us with completing the Memorial design – a brick or concrete company, brick or stone layer, trade or professional association, or contracting company. Please ask him or her to contact Sue Martucci at: suemartucci@gmail.com.

A sincere THANK YOU to you and all our wonderful supporters of CT Trees of Honor Memorial. Please stop by the Memorial to see all the great progress and best wishes for a wonderful summer. Please mark your calendar to attend the grand dedication of the Memorial planned for September 17, 2016.
Sincerely,
Sue Martucci, President
