Stamford Conducts Hurricane Preparedness Review

Hurricane season began in June and runs through November. Stamford officials want residents to prepare for the possibility of future storms.

STAMFORD, CT — Public safety officials and representatives from other community agencies met virtually on Wednesday to review Stamford's hurricane and coastal storm readiness protocols, according to a news release from the Mayor's Office.

Attendees included officials in city government, the Stamford Police Department, Stamford Fire Department, Operations Department, and Public Safety, Health, and Welfare.

"Keeping the people of Stamford safe is our number one priority. We want to make certain we are ready for foreseeable emergencies, which is why we regularly conduct proactive exercises such as these,” said Mayor David Martin in a news release. "Proactively planning and thinking ahead has been successful on numerous occasions, most notably the Covid-19 pandemic, and we will continue to keep planning ahead to be better prepared and to keep our City safe."

The city is reminding residents to be aware of the risks and necessary procedures affiliated with hurricanes, storm surges, flooding, high winds and tornadoes. Hurricane season began on June 1 and runs through Nov. 30. All residents within the Stamford community should revisit emergency plans to prevent loss of life and damage to property.

Last week, Tropical Storm Elsa dumped over five inches of rain in Stamford, which caused heavy flooding and road closures across the city.

"Being prepared and understanding how to react to hazards and risks associated with a hurricane are vital to the safety of our community," Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director Trevor Roach added in a news release. "In the event of a pending storm, it is important for residents to adhere to public safety warnings and follow the instructions necessary to keep themselves and their property safe."

Residents can prepare for hurricane season by developing an emergency plan, creating an emergency supply kit, and developing a family communications plan to help ensure loved ones can communicate with one another before and after a severe storm.
