Stamford Considers Fee-Based Plastic Bag Ban: Report
The city's Board of Representatives is slated to discuss it.
STAMFORD, CT — Stamford is considering joining Westport and Greenwich as lower Fairfield County communities that ban single-use plastic bags, but the proposed Stamford ban has a catch the other two do not, reports the Stamford Advocate.
Unlike the other two towns, the Stamford proposal carries a fee of $0.10 for the use of a paper bag, a move to try to encourage shoppers to use reusable bags. While paper bags are better for the environment than plastic ones, they still add to the amount of waste that needs to be recycled, officials say.
The Stamford Board of Representatives is scheduled to discuss the proposed ban during a meeting on Monday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. in City Hall.
