Simmons and Linares welcomed their third child, William, on Jan. 26, 2022. The couple also has two other sons, Teddy and Jack.

In preparation of her absence at the time, Board of Representatives President Jeffrey Curtis took over as acting mayor and served in that role until Simmons was able to resume her duties. The temporary shift of power is outlined in Samford's charter.
