Stamford Mugging Suspect Caught

The suspect is accused of robbing a man back in August, according to Stamford Police.

A suspect in the Aug. 2 mugging of a pedestrian was arrested by Stamford Police on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested after Stamford detectives obtained an arrest warrant when the victim identified the suspect in a photo lineup, according to police.

Caleb Newell, of Stamford, was charged with first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery in connection with the Aug. 2 incident on William Street.

The victim was walking in the area of William Street when he was approached by three men who surrounded him and demanded his wallet. Police said that when the victim objected he was punched, kicked, and hit with a bottle on his forehead. The attackers then took his wallet, which contained $140 and ran off.

The victim called 911 and was taken to Stamford Hospital where he was treated for a severe cut above his left eye that took seven stitches to close, according to police.

Two days later the victim was driving by the scene of the incident and observed one of the males who robbed and beat him. The suspect saw the victim and he attempted to hide his face. The Stamford Police Detective bureau followed up and identified that male as Caleb Newell who lives near where the attack occurred, police said.

Newell was picked out of a photo lineup and an arrest warrant was obtained.

Stamford Police Detective bureau located Newell at his residence and initially held a court set bond of $500,000. Newell was arraigned at Stamford Superior Court on Thursday and remains in custody, unable to post a bond reduced to $50,000, according to the Connecticut Judicial Branch website. He is due back in court
