Stamford Police Nab Car Burglary Suspects

Stamford Police say the numerous tips received since the release of a surveillance video, helped to ID the suspects.

Stamford Police say they received numerous tips since the release over the weekend of a video depicting two suspected car burglary suspects — and those tips led to the arrests of two men on Tuesday.

On Friday, Jan. 9, police investigators acquired a surveillance video of two males breaching a gated door that leads into a downtown parking garage at 200 Broad St. Police say there have been five vehicle burglaries from December to January. Police released the video late Saturday to local media.

In the video, two suspects were seen entering the garage. The first suspect was a Hispanic man wearing a blue sweatshirt with a Round Hill Club logo on front, and a black backpack. The second suspect was a black man wearing a black North Face sweatshirt and a red backpack.

“The SPD Detective bureau then secured arrest warrants for both suspects and a search warrant for the residence of Castillo. On 01/13/15 we executed a search warrant at a residence on Hillandale Ave. At the residence we located Castillo and placed him under arrest and discovered numerous proceeds from several vehicle burglaries at the residence. We also secured the backpack that was being worn in the video and also the distinct sweatshirt worn in the video that Castillo attempted to discard in his garbage can. Lewis then turned himself into Police a short time later.

“Both Castillo and Lewis were charged with two Counts of Burglary 3rd. Castillo bond totals were $30,000 and Lewis’s bond totals were $5000. We are currently sorting out the proceeds from the search warrant and expect more charges in the future.

“We would like to thank the community for providing numerous tips that led to the identification of these two individuals. Without the video from the property management company, social media, media outlets and the community working together this arrest would not come to fruition. Also, Sgt Chris Dicarlo, Officer Sean Boeger, and Officer Silas Redd.

did an excellent job putting all the pieces together and crafting arrest warrants and a search warrant in such an expeditious manner.”
