STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Police Department is warning residents of a kidnapping scam that has been targeting Spanish-speaking families.

"In the last three weeks we have seen a large uptick in the amount of scam calls that we have received in regards to parties claiming to kidnap a family member in return for a monetary exchange," police said in a social media post, noting the scam has been carried out on the texting/calling app "WhatsApp."

"In some cases the scammers have been using actual voice recordings of the family members to deceive the parties," police added.

"Most of the victims are so hysterical when they call that it's extremely difficult to gather the necessary information to even advise them this is most likely a scam," police said.
