Stamford Ranks 8th On CBRE's Annual List of Up-And-Coming Tech Markets

According to CBRE, Stamford's local tech employment has grown by 50 percent in the past five years.

STAMFORD, CT — Stamford received high praise in CBRE's annual list of up-and-coming North American tech-talent markets.

The city ranked eighth in the commercial real estate services and investment firm's Scoring Tech Talent report, which ranks 75 U.S. and Canadian markets according to their ability to attract and grow tech talent.

According to CBRE, Stamford's local tech employment has grown by 50 percent in the past five years and its total tech wages have increase by 24 percent.

The report identifies emerging tech hubs in most regions of North America. Canada has three cities on the list.

"Stamford has some of the most highly educated people in the country, with about 24 colleges in the area, including 19 private colleges and universities, two public colleges and universities, and three community colleges," said Executive Vice President of CBRE Tom Pajolek in a news release. "With excellent access to labor from surrounding communities via Metro North, including New York City, Stamford provides a wealth of top talent for tech firms looking to grow their operations."

According to CBRE:

  • Stamford’s had total tech employment of 15,060 in 2021 - ranking eight out of the 25 up-and-coming markets.
  • Its average tech wage of $113,947 was the highest among the emerging markets.
  • For the narrower category of software developers, Stamford also offers the second highest average wage - $108,578 – among the 25 markets, behind Trenton, N.J.
  • Stamford generated 374 tech talent degree graduates in 2020.

These up-and-coming markets are separate from the 50 larger tech markets that CBRE’s report ranks in its Tech Talent Scorecard. In contrast, the "next 25" markets are ranked by a narrower set of criteria than the top 50, including tech talent supply, wages, tech talent concentration, recent tech talent growth rates and their outlook.
