Stamford Recreation Expands Services At Star Center

The department is launching a new after school and early childhood initiatives.

STAMFORD, CT - From Stamford Recreation Services: This month Stamford Recreation Services announced the addition of two new youth programs based out of the Stamford Recreation Star Center. Beginning in the fall of 2018, the department will offer after school care for children grades K-5 as well as an early childhood education program for children ages 3-4.

“The mission of the Star Center is to offer excellent programs for all Stamford Residents, at one central location, at an affordable price”, explained Superintendent of Recreation, Laurie Albano. The Star Center, which was formerly Our Lady Star of the Sea Elementary School, is located at 1170 Shippan Avenue. The city is currently renting 8,500 of the 17,000 square-foot facility including four classrooms, a multi-purpose gymnasium, office, staff lounge and a full industrial kitchen. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand and enhance our programming to better serve our community,” she added.

The “After School Club” will be offered each day Stamford Public Schools are in session from 2:45PM - 5:30PM. Children in grades K-5 will be provided with both unstructured time to play inside in the gym or outside on the playground and structured time to complete homework, participate in arts and crafts or play games. The department worked with the Board of Education to ensure transportation from nearby schools is provided to the Star Center.

The department is also adding a new early childhood education program, called “Stay & Play,” for children ages 3-4. The drop-off program will meet three days a week from 9:00AM-12:00PM, and immerse children in a play-based approach to early learning focused on socialization and cooperation. Activities will include creative expression, dramatic play, music and movement, large and small motor activities, early literacy, sensory activities, math readiness, and outdoor play. The program will be directed by Karen Wenz and Beth Covino who have over 45 years of combined experience in early childhood education teaching and directing at various preschools. Families interested in registering fro Stay & Play are invited to attend one of two upcoming Open House events on Friday, May 4 or Friday, May 11 from 10AM-12PM to tour the facility, meet the teachers, learn about the curriculum, and ask questions.

Registration for both programs are currently open, with a limited number of spaces available for the inaugural 2018-2019 school year. Residents may complete registration online or in person at the Stamford Recreation Services office located at Government Center.
