Snow Emergency Declared In Stamford: Simmons

Heavy snowfall is expected to impact the area Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

STAMFORD, CT — Stamford residents are being urged to prepare for Tuesday's impending snowstorm which could bring 9 to 12 inches of snow, according to a news release from the city.

As a result, Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons has declared a "snow emergency" for the city.

The snow emergency will require the removal of all vehicles on designated snow emergency streets. Vehicles will be ticketed and towed while the snow emergency is in effect, the town said.

City parking garages will be open and free of charge starting Monday night at 9 p.m. until Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m.

City garages are located at:

  • Bedford Street Garage – 17 Forest St.
  • Bell Street Garage – 28 Bell St.
  • Summer Street Garage – 100 Summer St.

"Snow is forecast to begin overnight, with accumulation increasing through the morning tomorrow," Simmons said in a news release.

"We are declaring a snow emergency to give residents time to prepare and get their cars off the streets. Heavy snow is predicted and will make travel hazardous, and I encourage all residents to stay home to allow road crews to clear the streets. High wind gusts may lead to downed trees and wires and residents should be prepared and make sure you have a plan if the power goes out," she added.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the Stamford area beginning at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, until 6 p.m.

Wind gusts could reach as high as 33 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Hazardous driving conditions should be expected overnight Tuesday and throughout the day. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads so that city crews can clear them. If travel is necessary, use caution while driving.

Per Chapter 214 of the City of Stamford Code of Ordinances, after the snowfall has stopped, snow and ice must be cleared from sidewalks to ensure safe travel for pedestrians, especially near schools.

Scheduled residential garbage and recycling collection for Tuesday will be delayed one day until Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The scheduled collection for the rest of the week will also be delayed one day, with Friday’s scheduled collection to take place Saturday. In anticipation of the storm, residents should not put their toters curbside Monday night.

Warming centers are open for the times and locations listed on the city’s website.
