Stamford Rolls Out 'Sharrows' to Designate Shared Car, Bike Lanes

From Bull's Head to the South End and from the West Side to the East Side, cyclists can safely share the road with motorists.

The City of Stamford has completed the installation of more than 350 sharrows in and around Stamford’s downtown neighborhood.

The network was created in conjunction with Stamford’s Street Smart Initiative that was launched in September 2014.

The creation of the downtown sharrow network is another step in making Stamford’s streets more accessible and multi-modal, keeping the city in line with local and state transportation priorities. The extensive network allows cyclists to travel on sharrow-marked roadways from Bull’s Head to the South End and from the West Side to East Side.

Establishing a sharrow network is a common tool used by municipalities in order to remind motorists that roadways may be shared with cyclists and to clarify where cyclists are expected to ride. State law mandates that cyclists be given three feet of clearance when sharing the lane with vehicular traffic. A photo of one of the Stamford sharrows is included above.

Residents can view a map of the sharrow network and bike lanes here. Additional information will soon be available at www.Stamfordct.gov.

Signs on the side of the road have begun to be put up along the sharrow-marked roadways beginning on West Broad Street in order to create additional visibility and awareness of the network.
