Stamford Student, Staff Achievements Recognized By Board Of Ed
The Stamford Board of Education celebrated the accomplishments of select students and staff members during a recent meeting.
STAMFORD, CT — At each of its monthly meetings, the Stamford Board of Education proudly celebrates the accomplishments of select students and staff members. The board recognized the following achievements during its Oct. 22 meeting:
2020 National Merit Scholarship Program
Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) Senior Christopher Burke is a National Merit Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship® Program. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which runs the National Merit Scholarship Program, Christopher placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
National Hispanic Recognition Program Class of 2020
Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) Senior Alyssa Craner, Stamford High School (SHS) Senior Aron Ravin and Westhill High School (WHS) Senior Victoria Morgan were recently accepted into the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP). According to the College Board, which administers the NHRP along with Scholarship America, those recognized as NHRP scholars have scored in the top 2.5 percent among Hispanic and Latino 2018 PSAT/NMSQT test takers in the region. NHRP recognizes about 7,000 academically outstanding Hispanic and Latino high school juniors from the 400,000 students who take the PSAT/NMSQT each year.

Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Medal Awardee
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), a department of Columbia University in New York City, recently awarded The Round Table, Stamford High School's digital student newspaper, a Gold Medal for 2018-2019. The paper earned a total score of 950 out of a possible 1,000 points—their highest score ever. This is the fifth time The Roundtable has achieved Gold Medal status.
Additionally, CSPA judges awarded the publication “All-Columbian" honors in all three categories judged—Essentials, Verbal and Visual. According to CSPA, Essentials refers to the coverage it contains as well as all of the information that makes the newspaper reader-friendly. Verbal category includes good reporting, substantive quotes and correct style and mechanics. Visuals considers how the design, typography and photography complement each other to present a visually attractive story.

New York Jets and Gatorade High School Coach of the Week
The New York Jets and Gatorade awarded Stamford High School football coach Jamar Greene with the High School Coach of the Week award for Stamford's week 1 victory over Staples. The award is given to a coach in the tri-state area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to his community, the school and his student-athletes. Gatorade and the New York Jets will award the Stamford High Football team with a $2,000 grant and an automatic bid to compete in the 2020 New York Jets 11-ON Tournament.
