Stamford's SoundWaters To Celebrate 10th Annual Flotilla With Paddle Along Long Island Sound

STAMFORD, CT — SoundWaters will mark the 10th anniversary of its Flotilla event on Saturday, July 11, with its annual fundraising paddle along Long Island Sound.

The event, described by the organization as Long Island Sound's largest paddling event, is expected to bring together hundreds of participants for a four-mile paddle along the shoreline to raise money for SoundWaters' environmental education programs.

According to SoundWaters, the Flotilla has become a summer tradition over the past decade, bringing together local residents who share an interest in Long Island Sound and its protection. Funds raised through the event support the organization's hands-on science education and on-the-water learning programs for thousands of students each year.

"When we launched the Flotilla 10 years ago, we hoped it would become a special way for people to connect with Long Island Sound," said SoundWaters Vice President of Development Bob Mazzone in a news release. "Seeing paddlers come back year after year, and welcoming new ones into the tradition, is incredibly rewarding. The Flotilla has grown into more than just a fundraiser, it’s a celebration of this place and the community that cares about protecting it."

Participants will launch from Cove Island Park in Stamford and beaches in Darien before paddling around Shippan Point to the Cohen SoundWaters Harbor Center at Boccuzzi Park, where a beach party with music and lunch is planned.

The route is designed for a range of ages and skill levels. Kayak guides and support boats will be on the water, and organizers estimate the course will take most participants two hours or less to complete.

Participants must bring their own kayak or paddleboard, as equipment rentals are now closed.
