Teen Had Loaded Gun In Library, Stamford Police Say

STAMFORD, CT — An 18-year-old Stamford man was arrested Monday after police say he was found with an illegal, loaded gun inside Ferguson Library.

Markiss Lindsay was arrested and charged with illegal transfer of a firearm, having a pistol without a permit, and illegal possession of a high-capacity magazine.

On Monday at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Stamford Police Narcotics and Organized Crime (NOC) unit received "timely intel" that there was a young male in the Ferguson Library in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun, according to Stamford Assistant Police Chief Richard Conklin, who noted the tipster provided a detailed description of the suspect and where he was seated.

At approximately 12 p.m., officers responded to the library to locate the suspect, and shortly before 12:30 p.m., a man matching the description provided to police was located in the rear right corner of the first floor, with two other individuals, Conklin said.

Officers detained all three men, and a search of the suspect's backpack found a green and black Taurus 9mm handgun with a loaded high-capacity magazine, Conklin said. There were 11 rounds in the magazine and one round in the handgun's chamber.

The suspect, identified as Lindsay, confirmed he did not have a valid CT pistol permit, and he was arrested without incident.

"This was certainly a dangerous situation, and proactive arrests go a long way to make our city safe," said Conklin, who thanked the officers involved in the investigation and arrest.

"This was done in a very quick and timely fashion. I think many people in the library didn't even know what was going on. It was very low-key and moved very quickly," Conklin added.

Lindsay was issued a $100,000 bond, and he's scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 24.
