My "Around the House" Tip of the Day for Tuesday January 16 , 2023:
Last week my wife complained that the powder room toilet was running... sure enough, when I checked to see what was wrong, as the "fluidmaster" float came all the way up, instead of turning the water off... there was a trickle that never stopped, and a very hushed hiss of water running. Now a fluidmaster is the replacement for the old ball float that resided in the tank for the early years of older toilet innerds. The valve is basically a tower made out of plastic with a circular float that when it rises, it shuts off the water. The shaft of the tower has a locking ring on it that allows you to raise and lower the height of the float to suit different toilet tank configurations and the amount of water that can enter the tank. They are held in place with a rubber gasket in the bottom of the tank and a plastic nut on the bottom. Changing them out is easy once the water is off and the tank itself is emptied (probably the most difficult part) I use a plastic cup to take most of the water out then a rag or sponge for the rest. Once empty, spin out the old and insert the new... making sure the height of the replacement is the same as the old. (There are videos on the internet about this ). Now there is no wasted water or hiss and I'm off to the next chore. To check yours, just put an ear near the tank and listen.
