Water Company Imposter Steals $51,000 from Elderly Stamford Woman

The victim thought the imposter was legitimate because she had leaky pipes.

An elderly Stamford woman who apparently thought the man who showed up to inspect her leaky pipes became victim of a robbery of sorts.

The victim told Stamford Police that she apparently wasn’t suspicious when a man posing as a water company employee who showed up at her door on Stamford’s East Side on May 19 and said he needed to inspect leaking pipes. The woman had leaky pipes, so she let him in her home, according to The Advocate.

Police believe that the alleged water company workman saw the where the woman hid her money when she pulled out the $50 fee that the workman said was needed to pay for the initial inspection of her leaking pipes. He apparently used a cell phone while inside the home and police believe he contacted an accomplice who then entered the home while the woman brought the “workman” into her basement to inspect the pipes.
