My "Around the House " Tip of the Day for Friday February 2 , 2024:
How's your water taste? Does it have a garlic smell? Does it feel gritty in the shower? Or smell like Chlorine? Good water should not smell bad or taste like anything but water. It should not be staining your laundry with iron or manganese and there shouldn't be any pesticides, or grit, or coloring. Although we test most wells when we do an inspection for about 22 different water issues, more and more people on municipal and community wells are asking home inspectors to check the water quality. Checking your water should be done by someone who has been trained to draw the water, use correct autoclaved bottles for potability tests, and they must refrigerate the sample and get it to the lab within 24-36 hours. We often take water quality for granted, and yet it doesn't take but some food hitting the aerator when preparing dinner that can grow bacteria on the faucet. Testing your water every few years, especially if someone does a plumbing repair, is a good way to assure clean water. Most water can be treated quite easily with filters, softeners, ph adjustments, Ultraviolet lights, and radon mitigation. When was the last time you thought of your water quality?
