2 Killed In Stonington Boating Accident Identified: Report

Authorities determined the boat likely hit a breakwall and started taking on water, according to a report.

UPDATE: The two people killed in a boating accident have been identified as David Motherway, 54, of Stonington, and Brian Collie, 52, of Colorado, according to NBC Connecticut.

The boating accident occurred in Stonington near Latimer Point. Authorities have said that the boat likely crashed into a break wall sometime Friday night and the two men were discovered on Saturday morning, NBC CT reported. (Read more at NBC CT).

The town of Stonington posted on Instagram that "On behalf of the Stonington community, we offer our deepest sympathy to the Motherway family. David's thoughtful contributions on the Board of Finance, as well as other volunteering within the Town, helped shape various programs and projects for Stonington. (Original story) STONINGTON, CT — Two people are dead as a result of a boating accident off Latimer Point in Stonington, according to Stonington Police Capt. Todd Olson.

According to Coast Guard radio communications, a 20-foot center console vessel was "partially submerged" after it was involved in a collision a half-mile south of Latimer Point.

A witness reported the accident to Stonington police at 7:11 a.m., Olson confirmed to Patch. The witness reportedly found the boat adrift and two unresponsive men aboard, Olson told The Associated Press.

The collision happened Friday, according to The AP. An early investigation determined the boat likely hit a breakwall and started taking on water.

The Coast Guard and New London County marine units responded to the collision, police confirmed. A dive team from an unknown department responded. In addition to Stonington and Groton, New London County marine units from Taftville and Yantic were among marine first responders at the scene.

Olson said the accident is being investigated by Stonington police detectives, the Stonington Police Department Marine Unit and the state Environmental Conservation Police Accident Recon Unit.
