Pawcatuck's Real Estate History

A brief description of real estate listings in Pawcatuck in the early 1900's, and another from 1987.

Pawcatuck’s Real Estate History is just fascinating! If you look back in old newspaper articles, you can find a ton of old pictures of houses all across Pawcatuck, and photographs of them! One of the big reality companies in town was the William Wilcox Co., which was located in the Central Theatre Building at 43 W. Broad St. Later, Mr. Wilcox moved his business to the Walton Block, which was located across the street. Here are just a handful of examples of real estate listings in Pawcatuck from circa 1918-1987!

This beautiful home is situated on Courtland St. and is known as the Hemphill Estate. The dwelling has 15 light and airy rooms and is as modern as can be made. The builder of this home had artistic tastes and it is safe to say that few, if not any homes in Greater Westerly can be compared to this home. It is situated just far enough from West Broad St. to be quiet and retired and free from dust and noise. The lot is about 75 by 165; fruit trees, and asparagus bed. Anyone desiring to purchase more land can do so at a reasonable advance in price.”

Mill Pond Reality

These are just a few of many old real estate listings! Usually, houses closest to West Broad St. were listed in the newspapers since that was the street to live on in those days. It was very expensive, so only the “nice neighborhood” houses were listed in the paper. A special “thank you” to the Westerly Sun and the New London Day!
