Pequot Plant Farm
Pequot Plant Farms is one of my favorite destinations at any time of the year.
Whenever I visit Pequot Plant Farm in Stonington, it always amazes me how flowers that are so varied in color can look so great together. When I walked into the greenhouse Friday morning, I was planning to buy impatiens, but I was just blown away by the geraniums – reds, oranges, pinks, purples and variegated shades that looked as if their colors had been splashed on with a paintbrush. The effect was incredible when all these different varieties were set out together in the greenhouse!
I bought impatiens for my front garden and couldn’t help noticing how beautiful they look with the geraniums that I had just purchased. The front of my house is a challenge because it faces west. It does not receive full sun and the late afternoon sun can be strong enough to fade some colors. However, my impatiens always do just fine and look great with a minimum of effort. Last year’s front garden was positively fluorescent in shades of rose, pink, violet and Dazzler Punch. Dazzler Punch will be the focus of this year’s garden, where it will be surrounded by lighter shades of pink, salmon and violet Super Elfins. I’ll grow several geraniums in containers on the front doorsteps, where they will provide a nice welcome.
When people tell me about plants that they have purchased at “big box” stores, I usually cringe. My plants were nurtured in the greenhouseright here in Stonington. I couldn’t help noticing how bushy and vigorous these seedlings are, compared to the neglected, drooping plants that I sometimes see at big box stores.
Pequot Plant Farm is operated by Dan Jeffrey and has been owned by the Jeffrey family for forty one years. It is one of my favorite destinations every spring and summer, but also in the fall and at Christmas. Their Christmas wreaths are gorgeous and are decorated by Dan’s staff.
I am a believer in buying local whenever possible. I am never disappointed with the plants that I purchase at Pequot Plant Farm. I can’t wait to go back again. Maybe I’ll buy a hanging basket full of Wave petunias next time!
