Celebrate National Library week at SFL — April 19 - 25

Spend a day with us as you dive into the fascinating world of dahlias! This workshop will focus on the essential skills of dividing and planting dahlia tubers, ensuring a beautiful bloom for seasons to come. Whether you are a gardening novice or a seasoned green thumb, this day will provide you with valuable knowledge to cultivate these stunning flowers.
You will begin with an introduction to the life cycle of dahlias and the importance of proper tuber care. You’ll then receive step-by-step instruction on how to divide dahlia tubers, a vital process for maintaining healthy plants and increasing your blooms. Afterward, you will learn how to plant and care for your tubers, setting them up for success in your own garden.
Throughout the day, you’ll take time to reflect on the beauty and resilience of nature, drawing inspiration from the regenerative process of planting and growing.
There will be a demonstration of dividing tubers followed by a Q&amp;A session. Feel free to bring a few of your tuber clumps for advice on how to separate them.
Each participant will receive a bag of 8 tubers and a book of year-round dahlia care.
The program will begin at 10 AM, followed by lunch at 12:30 PM. During lunch, Julie will be available to answer questions. If additional discussion is needed, the group can reconvene afterward to address any remaining questions.

Mystic River Drawbridge 

On Wednesday, April 22 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., Williams-Mystic college students will perform a live poetry reading from kayaks on the Mystic River beneath the Bascule Bridge.
Part of a Global Ocean Literature course taught by Professor Ned Schaumberg, the event features poems about climate, the ocean, and place in a call-and-response format between kayaks and the shoreline. The performance brings poetry off the page and into the environment it describes.
“It’s one thing to read about the ocean,” Schaumberg said. “It’s another to look down at the water the poem is talking about. The words land differently.”

For nearly 50 years, college students from across the country have come here each semester to study the ocean through science, policy, history, and literature, with hands-on learning in coastal communities and on the water.

Welcome spring with a burst of color and creativity as you explore Pysanky, the enchanting Ukrainian tradition of decorating eggs. Using warmed beeswax to “write” whimsical patterns and meaningful symbols, you’ll build up layers of bright, joyful dyes that transform each egg into a vibrant little treasure. This magical process takes egg decorating to a whole new level, turning simple shells into miniature masterpieces. These charming creations look beautiful on display all year long and bring a happy pop of color to any corner of your home.

Built in the mid-1700s as a functioning livestock farm, Deans Mill Farm has gone through an evolution in recent decades. A full renovation of the historic buildings and rejuvenation of the surrounding 70+ acres has made the property into the incredible venue it is today.
