SUMMER STRINGS: Free Outdoor Violin Concert in Wilcox Park

Westerly, RI — June 7, 2026 — The community is warmly invited to Summer Strings, a featured violin orchestra performance presented by the Violin School under the direction of Ashley Jones. The concert will take place on Sunday, June 7 at 1:00 PM at the historic bandstand in Wilcox Park (44 Broad Street, Westerly, RI).

This free, family-friendly event will showcase a vibrant program of both classical and contemporary repertoire. Audiences can expect selections from renowned composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Antonio Vivaldi, alongside modern pieces, folk tunes, lively jigs, and a traditional Celtic air.

Summer Strings is an annual outdoor celebration of music and community, bringing together students and audiences of all ages in one of Westerly‘s most cherished public spaces. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and enjoy an afternoon of live music in the park.

The Holy Family is a beloved image for many - offering a picture of the vocations of father, mother, and child.&nbsp; Saint Joseph was given the task of protecting Saint Mary and baby Jesus in the scriptures from King Herod, being told in a dream to take them to safety in Egypt during the Martyr of the Innocents.&nbsp; Saint Joseph serves as a model for both fatherhood and adopted fatherhood.&nbsp; This image is a wonderful piece to display in the home.&nbsp; We can see their example of family and model our own families.&nbsp; Joshua 24:15c KJV "&nbsp;but as for me and my house, we will serve the&nbsp;Lord."

This workshop will be a four layer technique illustration of the Holy Family in watercolor. Students start with a tracing of the original icon outline.&nbsp; We apply many layers to capture the depth and dimension, applying layers of red below the halos and gold background for warmth and shine.&nbsp; The painting itself follows a system of local color, shade, and light.&nbsp; The final image has golden accents.
For the class, students will produce a watercolor image with depth, dimension, and beauty to adorn the home or give as a gift on 14 x 11 paper.
All materials and tools needed to complete an icon are provided. Students should arrive with basic brush skills, a familiarity with the color wheel, and some experience mixing colors.
This week-long workshop begins with check-in at 4:30 PM on Sunday night, followed by dinner at 5:30 PM for students and instructors. Dinner will be followed by a workshop introduction and conference, which ends at 8:00 PM. You are welcome to attend daily Mass at 9 AM. Hands-on instruction begins Monday morning after Mass. The workshop concludes Friday at 1 PM.

Deans Mill Farm 

Built in the mid-1700s as a functioning livestock farm, Deans Mill Farm has gone through an evolution in recent decades. A full renovation of the historic buildings and rejuvenation of the surrounding 70+ acres has made the property into the incredible venue it is today. Deans Mill Farm now operates primarily as a private event space and five-room bed and breakfast tucked down a private road in Stonington, Connecticut. It shares its property with Dragonfly Equestrian Center and is home to dozens of horses. On the property lies meadows, hiking trails, beautiful fields and Dragonfly Disc Golf. The property can be rented for weddings, birthday parties and other special events. Additionally, the bed and breakfast can be rented by the room or reserved in its entirety for complete privacy. The Farm has the ability to host small private indoor events for up to 50 guests in the Farmhouse.
