Car Damaged By Asphalt on Gold Star Memorial Bridge?

If you drove on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge Monday, August 17, you might have gotten an unexpected tar-like matter on your car.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation and local police received a number of emails and phone calls from motorists after the northbound lane of the bridge underwent milling and repaving. Some of the material hitched a ride on people’s cars.

What Happened

One of the lanes on the bridge was opened to traffic too early, The Day reported. The material had not completely dried when the lane was opened.

DOT spokesperson Kevin Nursick assured motorists that anyone whose car was damaged will not be forgotten by the DOT. He said the subcontractor agreed to repairing people’s cars.

The paving project is scheduled for completion in September and pertains to Groton, New London and Waterford. The main contractor is Tilcon, who then hired the subcontractor in question.

The Ledyard Police Department shared the following information on its Facebook page:

If anyone may have been experienced exposure to excessive tar on your vehicles while traveling over the Gold Star Bridge on 8/17/15, you are encouraged to take photos of the potential damage and contact the New London DOT Field Office at 860-437-1409.
