Courtney Wins 2nd District Race

Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney of Vernon easily beat back his main challenger, East Lyme Republican Paul Formica, with a resounding 2nd District victory in Tuesday night's election. 

The Associated Press called the election at about 9:20 p.m., with Courtney ahead 48,430 votes (65%) to 23,899 votes (32%) with 34 out of 135 precincts reporting.

Having had just six months to campaign against a popular incumbent, Formica knew going in that his chances of victory were slim. "I was hoping for 40 percent," said Formica, "but he's a likeable guy and he's worked hard for the district. We will work together. It's important that this country comes together."

Courtney was circumspect in victory.

"This is a nice win, that's for sure. I am very grateful for the support I have received," Courtney said. "It's a tough time for Connecticut and the nation and anybody in public office has a huge burden to get the support. It says a lot to me and I am appreciative of it.

"You have to work hard in this district, and we worked hard. This has to be the most independent-minded district in the state and you can never take this district for granted."

The two other challengers, Green Party candidate Colin D. Bennett and Libertarian Daniel J. Reale, got 912 and 910 votes, respectively.

Courtney said he's eager to get back to work when Congress reconvenes.

"It will be back to work on Monday for the lame duck session," he said. "It's now time to concentrate on the most important issue — the economy."
