'Crippling and Potentially Historic Blizzard' Takes Aim at Stonington, Mystic

The National Weather Service is advising residents not to travel from Monday evening into Tuesday.

Calling it a “crippling and potentially historic blizzard,” the National Weather Service is advising against traveling from Monday evening through Tuesday because of a blizzard that could dump up to 36 inches of snow on Mystic and Stonington each.

The NWS replaced its blizzard watch with a blizzard warning and issued a coastal flood watch for the area.

  • Sunday: Increasing clouds, with a low around 18. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. North wind 6 to 8 mph.
  • Monday: A slight chance of snow before 9 a.m., then widespread blowing snow and a chance of snow between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., then snow likely with widespread blowing snow after 4 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 31. Wind chill values between 5 and 15. Northeast wind 10 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
  • Monday Night: Snow likely before 7 p.m., then snow with widespread blowing snow after 7 p.m. The snow could be heavy at times. Some thunder is also possible. Low around 21. Wind chill values between zero and 10. Windy, with a northeast wind 21 to 26 mph increasing to 34 to 39 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 10 to 16 inches possible in Stonington, 11 to 17 inches in Mystic.
  • Tuesday: Snow with widespread blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Some thunder is also possible. High near 25. Wind chill values between zero and 10. Windy, with a north wind 31 to 38 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 9 to 13 inches possible in Stonington; 8 to 12 in Mystic.
  • Tuesday Night: Snow with widespread blowing snow before 10 p.m., then snow likely with widespread blowing snow between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., then widespread blowing snow and a chance of snow after 1am. Low around 14. Windy, with a northwest wind 26 to 31 mph decreasing to 17 to 22 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible in Stonington; 1 to 3 in Mystic.
  • Wednesday: A slight chance of snow before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 27. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
