The Prizefighters of Pawcatuck

Dave Erskine, former Chief of Police and member of the Historical Society's Board of Directors, will present a program. "The Prizefighters of Pawcatuck" on November 15 at 6 pm at the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center.  Did you know that the Knights of Columbus chapter of St. Michael's Church built a wooden boxing arena just off Stillman Avenue in 1928 that held 1500 fans?  It was the site of weekly matches between the likes of Hookie Jackson, Big Boy Burlap, and Battling Irk. Mr. Erskine has researched hundreds of newspaper articles, consulted aerial photographs from the state archives, and interviewed several gentlemen who remember the arena and the fights.
