First Selectman Rob Simmons to Chair Dog Park Committee

Property by the Town Dock in Stonington unofficially has been used as a dog park.

Stonington First Selectman Rob Simmons has been chosen as the chairman of a committee charged with studying the feasibility of a dog park at the Town Dock property.

The site has been used unofficially as a dog park for some time. It is also the focus of a lawsuit by nearby residents who consider that use to be a potential danger, in part because it was never sanctioned for such use and does not have permits nor zoning, reports The Day.

In addition to Simmons, former First Selectman Donald Maranell recently was chosen the committee’s vice chairman.

“It is my hope – in fact, my expectation – that we can get over some of the past rhetoric and acrimony to address the problem in a manner that reflects the serious nature of the problem. I love this town and I am proud to live here. I would like to think we can solve our problems outside of the courts in a fair and civil manner,” said Simmons at a recent committee meeting, as reported by The Day.
