Flute Recital--Westerly Library Auditorium: two flutists and a pianist will be performing classical pieces as well as popular music and a medley of Irish jigs

WESTERLY – Saturday, March 7th, at 2 p.m., Westerly Library will be hosting a flute recital in its Auditorium, featuring flutists John Graham and Karen Toy, and pianist Lynn Dowding. Some of the many highlights of the concert are a performance of the “Queen of the Night” aria from Mozart’s Magic Flute, duets by Beethoven and Schubert, Gabriel Faure’s “Fantasie”, and Honegger’s “Danse de la Chevre”, which tells the story of one day in the life of a goat in musical terms. The program will also include popular music such as “Danny Boy”, “Come Back to Sorrento”, with guest vocalist Ed Gradilone, a medley of Irish jigs, and the Neapolitan Tarantella to celebrate St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Days will be included.

Flutist Karen Toy is a resident of Wakefield and teaches music in the South Kingstown schools. Her performance experience includes the American Band, the Pipe Dream Flute Choir, and occasional appearances associated with area churches and community groups. Other interests include bird watching and swing dancing.

Pianist Lynn Dowding is the choral director at Chariho Middle School and High Schools. She is also the musical director at Central Baptist Church in Westerly. She has accompanied many local soloists and theater productions, as well as serving as the Newport Navy Chorister’s accompanist.

Flutist John Graham, a Westerly native, taught music in the West Warwick Public Schools from 1970-2000, and fourth grade at St. Thomas Regional School from 2000-2008. He has performed with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, American Band, and the Pipe Dream Flute Choir. Presently, John is enjoying his retirement playing the flute and attending Westerly High School sporting events.
