Honoring Jerry Desmond: How To Donate To Memorial Fund

STONINGTON, CT — Addressing Congress, Rep. Joe Courtney described Jerry Desmond as a "fierce optimist" who dedicated his life to public service, with a special emphasis on his decades-long work with young people.

"Jerry was a perfect fit for the Stonington Public School's athletic programs. He appreciated working with the town's youth," Courtney said, addressing Congress Jan. 10.

"Jerry's life was defined by his love for teaching and giving to his community," Courtney said. "His actions touched thousands of people, and he served as an excellent role model for Stonington's next generation."

After a courageous fight against cancer, Desmond died at age 63 on Christmas Eve 2021. A member of the Stonington Police Department for 34 years, where he also served as the department's youth officer, he was also a longtime Stonington High School coach.

In early January, the Stonington Board of Education agreed to honor Desmond by renaming a roadway behind the school's gymnasium as Desmond Way.

Stonington Steel is designing, building and erecting an archway near the school's Donald E. Palmer Field entrance as part of the memorial to honor Desmond, his wife Jackie said on Facebook.

The project is expected to be completed this spring, but fundraising is underway now. Desmond said the estimated cost is $18,000 and to date, some $11,800 in donations have been received or pledged.
