Kate Geary Jewelry...A Real Gem

Studio allows all ages to create jewelry using their own creativity -- and Kate's tools and know-how.

Dazzling and vividly colored gems, beads and stones beckon. It’s a lovely space —all light and chic décor with hand-picked, one-of-a-kind pieces. It doubles as a jewelry retail shop and a jewelry-making studio for people who’d like to choose and create their own pieces…bracelets, necklaces, earrings and the like.

But at at Velvet Mill Studios in the Borough, it’s Kate herself that really beckons. Geary’s vibe is the warm, fuzzy one that invites you in and keeps you much longer than you originally intended to stay.

She’s at once talented and knowledgeable about her craft. And she said her greatest joy these days is when a client creates “something that makes them happy.”

“It’s a thrill, a delight,” she said.

Self-taught and Rhode Island School of Design-trained, Geary raised her family—all six of her children now adults—first and now, in her early 50s, has taken what was a passion to create to another level. A business to sell her work but also to provide a venue—and advice if folks desire—for people to come, “create pieces they love and maybe enjoy a bottle of wine while they’re doing that.”

‘An ancient art for the young at heart,’ is her motto. At her studio, “all ages can come to create." Geary offers jewelry-making—from keepsake to heirloom re-design—in small, intimate workshops and parties from birthday to ‘girl’s night out’ (the latter is where adults can BYOB; Geary has the glasses!). A very long work table is laden with myriad dazzling gem stones, colorful beads and the tools and accoutrement needed to construct “your perfect piece.”

“I’m doing what I love and I want to share that,” Geary said.

Embracing social media to promote her business, Kate Geary Jewelry is on Facebook and recently launched her own website.
