Local DAR sponsors annual writing contest

American History Essay Contest

Students in grades 5 - 8 attending schools in Groton, Pawcatuck, Stonington and North Stonington are invited to enter a writing contest sponsored by the Anna Warner Bailey chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The contest is open to public, parochial and home school students.


This years subject/title is "Celebrating a Century: America's National Parks". The National Park Service was established by Congress in 1916 and today manages approximately 84.4 million acres of park land. One student essay is chosen from each of grades 5 - 8. Local essay entries will be judged at the local level and if chosen, the state and national levels (the national winner receives a cash prize). Local winners are featured in the local newspaper and receive a certificate of achievement. Winners will find that adding this to college applications, resumes' and employment applications very beneficial to them.

Essay submission deadline is November 18, 2016. Details are available at public and parochial schools or by calling 860-535-3129.
