MA Man Who Led Troopers On 3-State Chase Wanted For Arson: Police

A man who led police on a three-state chase that ended in North Stonington is facing numerous charges.

NORTH STONINGTON, CT — Police have charged a man who led them on a three-state chase that ended with an hour-long standoff in North Stonington on Wednesday. Ian Grant, 36, was wanted in Massachusetts for an arson that occurred in his Dartmouth home, according to state police.

The chase began Wednesday morning when Grant fled police attempting to serve several outstanding arrest warrants on him. State troopers set up stop sticks on Route 195 in Westport, MA.

As Grant approached, he drove on the highway's median and directly at state troopers, eventually striking two cruisers.

A short while later, Rhode Island State Police spotted Grant's Toyota pickup in Newport. Grant displayed what appeared to be an assault rifle at state troopers, according to police.

Grant eventually entered Connecticut, traveling from Route 78 in Stonington to Route 2. State police forced his his truck off the road on Route 2 in North Stonington.

An hour-long standoff followed with Grant refusing to leave his truck. After negotiations with Grant failed, both pepper spray and tear gas were deployed by Rhode Island State Police to get him into custody, state police said.

Grant was charged with reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, failure to drive in proper lane, interfering with an officer, and first-degree reckless endangerment. His bond was set at $200,000. He is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court Friday.

Grant will face additional charges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Police said Grant did have guns in the truck but that they could not be seized until an arrest warrant was approved.
