MYSTIC, CT — Mystic Aquarium today announced that it has been awarded the 2022 Outstanding Project Green Bank Award in the “Building Solutions” category. In collaboration with Verogy and ESC, the Green Bank recognizes Mystic Aquarium for its innovation and collaboration to accomplish its efficiency and sustainability goals at the aquarium. The Connecticut Green Bank established the Green Bank Awards to recognize companies advancing the green energy movement and helping bring resilience, health, and equity to Connecticut.
“This project has greatly reduced our energy consumption, improved the reliability of critical equipment, and positioned our institution as a leader in advancing the causes to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint by large, public venues” said Keith Sorensen, Senior Vice President of Facilities and Capital Projects. “Personally, it was one of the most rewarding projects that I’ve managed over the years. It was carefully planned, strategically financed, proficiently implemented and highly successful in terms of expectations.”

As an outstanding example of the ability of the Green Bank’s Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy (C-PACE) financing and Solar Power Purchase Agreement (Solar PPA) programs to reduce energy burdens and increase efficiency - this award recognizes the energy efficiency and solar project at Mystic Aquarium. This award also recognizes ESC Controls for its energy efficiency contributions, including HVAC, lighting, and energy-monitoring equipment, and Verogy for the 272 kW solar installation. This comprehensive project is helping the Aquarium reduce energy usage and costs, with savings estimated at $1.8 million over the expected useful life of the measures.
The project, which was announced in November 2021, includes new solar panels on Mystic Aquariums’ roofs along with new, energy efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems throughout its campus. Additionally, the project involves the upgrading of energy-monitoring equipment, interior and exterior lighting and equipment in the animal habitats. These upgrades provide a cleaner, healthier experience for both guests and marine life.
