Mystic Aquarium Rescues Baby Seal From Stonington Beach

A baby seal is doing well after being rescued over the weekend.

MYSTIC, CT — Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program recently rescued a seal pup, according to The Connecticut Post. It was the first seal rescue since the program resumed in November.

The seal pup was found stranded on the shores of Mason's Island at the mouth of the Mystic River in Stonington over the weekend. The pup was brought back to the aquarium's facility and is doing well.

Aquarium officials said they believe human and dog activity at the beach may have scared away the seal pup's mother.

The seal's white coat, referred to as lanugo, shows that the mother gave birth to the pup quite recently. The seal pup appears to be healthy and will receive nutrition during rehabilitation before being returned to the wild, according to FOX 61.
