Mystic Center Releases Great Horned Owl Into the Wild
The owl came to Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center with severe nerve damage in her feet.
Post from Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center:
Our great horned owl Sam, who has been with us for four years, was released today into the woods of Preston, where she was found in 2010.
We had not thought Sam would ever be releasable, she came to us with severe nerve damage in her feet. She was unable to perch or use her talons to catch prey. When we got her she was emaciated, weak and covered with parasites. For months we soaked her feet in Epsom salts and when she was well enough she went to live with Mr. Bill, our great horned mascot.

About six months ago Sam started showing signs that she would be able to survive in the wild, swooping and climbing in the enclosure and showing great strength in her talons.
The release today went beautifully - watch for photos and video in The Day - and we wish her all the best. We will miss Sam but this is the core of what we do and we are happy we were able to return her to her natural home.
