Obituary: Beatrice Lopes Allen, 93, Of Stonington
Bea was proud to be from Stonington and proud of her Portuguese heritage.

Beatrice Lopes Allen passed quietly on March 4th, 2018 just shy of her 94th birthday. She was born in a house in Stonington village and lived most of her life within the town.
Bea was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church and a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Bea was proud to be from Stonington and proud of her Portuguese heritage. She helped many Portuguese immigrants become citizens, translating for them and helping them find work.

She loved being part of her community and church, volunteering wherever she was needed. She served on the Board of the CT Community Credit Union and worked in the Tax Assessor's office for the borough.
She was a hard worker and worked well into her 70's. She moved from a partnership in Victoria’s Grocery store to working with Wiggy, Joe and Josie at Stonington Market. She spent some time at Chelsea Groton Bank and then as a secretary at CT Investment Casting Cooperation, retiring in 1986 to take care of her mother.

In later years, she worked at Noni’s and for Water Street Cafe, selling ice cream. She took care of children in her home and stayed close to their families for many years.
Her children were all well behaved because she knew everyone in town and they knew her. Any indiscretions would reach her ears before dinner time. Same thing applied to the grandchildren.
Bea loved to sing and musicals, singing with St. Mary’s Minstrel’s in the 50’s and learned to tap during the 60's, performing just once in a duet to "Me and My Shadow."
She loved to bake and passed that love on to her children and grandchildren. She called seafood Depression Food and loved going out for “a good hamburger.”
Beatrice is survived by her son, Robert Allen Jr., and his companion, Catherine M. Johnstone of North Stonington; two daughters, Mary Sullivan and Patricia Linder both of Stonington; five grandchildren, Clayton Allen, Nicholas Allen Sullivan and his wife, Melanie, Jessica Rose Page and Russell and Molly Linder; and five great-grandchildren, Lukas and Liam Sullivan and Michael, Isabella and James Page. She was predeceased by her parents, Silvan and Rosella (Moniz) Lopes.
A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, March 9th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church (95 Main St., Stonington). Her burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Mary Church.
