Obituary: Joel H. Murphy, 89, of Mystic
Murphy was a 20-plus-year career firefighter with the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department.

Joel H. Murphy, 89 of Mystic, formerly of Groton, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at his residence, with his family by his side.

Murphy was born in Mystic, on October 5, 1925, the son of Loren H. and Mary Kenyon Murphy. Murphy married Alice Irene Winkler on September 16, 1958 in Norwich. Alice passed away on March 8, 2006.
Murphy was a 20-plus year career firefighter with the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department and a charter member of the newly formed Local 2704 Firefighters Union, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant on October 5, 1985.

Murphy is survived by his children, son Kevin Murphy and his wife Nancy of Mystic and their children Keith, Peter, and Mason, son Mark and his wife Patricia of Norwich and their children Valerie, Patrick and Sarah and great granddaughter Shaylen, daughter Susan Campanelli and husband Roger of Fox Island, Washington and their children Allyson and Kelsi, and his brother Warren “Bud” Murphy of Waterford. Joel was predeceased by his sister, Mary “Tootsie” Brown of Groton and brother Melvin of California.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, at noon at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St. Interment will be private.

A visiting hour will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Donations in his memory may be directed the Wounded Warrior Project, P. O. Box 758517. Topeka, KS 66675.
