Obituary: Marci-Lyn Casey, 47, of Mystic

Marci lived a life full of love, laughter and grace.

Marci-Lyn (Carew) Casey, 47, of Mystic, beloved wife of 22 years to John P. Casey and devoted mother to John E. “Jack” and Nora Margaret, died peacefully Sunday, November 20, 2016, after living a life full of love, laughter, and grace, despite being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 27 and learning that the cancer had recurred three years ago.

Born in Hartford, CT on December 2, 1968, Marci was the daughter of John and Joan (Roarke) Carew of East Lyme. Marci grew up in Enfield, CT and attended public school there, graduating from Enrico Fermi High School in 1986.

Marci attended the University of Connecticut, where she met John, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences. Marci obtained her Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from The George Washington University in 1992, where she was a University Fellow.

Between the years of 1991 and 1998, Marci and John lived first in Arlington, VA and then in Washington, DC, where Marci worked for Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, VA. They were married in 1994 and moved to Mystic in 1998 when John was stationed at the U.S. Submarine Base after completing law school. After taking time off to raise her children, Marci returned to work and for the last two years was employed as a Speech-Language Pathologist for LEARN Regional Educational Service Center in Old Lyme.

Prior to working for LEARN, Marci worked in various school districts, including Groton, Ledyard, New London, and East Lyme. She also worked at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in the Speech and Audiology Department.

In addition to her husband, children, and parents, Marci leaves two brothers, John M. Carew and his wife, Laura, of Apex, NC and Michael Carew and his wife, Stephanie, of Zebulon, NC; her mother-in-law, Jean Casey and her companion, Alex Bralski of Springfield, MA; two sisters-in-law, Susan Casey and her husband, Peter Calkins, of Gloucester, MA, and Mary Casey and her husband, Jeffrey Blackwell, of Nantucket, MA; a brother-in-law, Steven Casey of Enfield; her nieces and nephews, Heather and Paige Carew, Mikey and Rayleigh Carew, Ashley Bourland and her husband, Jim McCarthy, Hannah and Roger Bourland, Henry and Mae Blackwell, and Jared, Kyle, and Michael Casey; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Marci will also be missed by her many close friends who have been a constant source of love, support, and companionship, as well as her dedicated co-workers, and wonderful neighbors.

Her family will receive friends Tuesday, November 22nd from 12-4 & 6-9 pm at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main St. Mystic where Marci was a faithful parishioner.

Everyone is kindly asked to go directly to church Wednesday morning. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery River Rd. Old Mystic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Marci’s memory be made to Groton Education Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 825, Groton, CT 06340-0825.
