Pregnant Manatee Rehabilitated by Mystic Aquarium Swims to Bahamas

Researchers were able to track the creature's journey from Florida to the Bahamas with a tracking device.

MYSTIC, CT - The pregnant manatee that was rescued off of Cape Cod and rehabilitated at the Mystic Aquarium has swam to the Bahamas.

Scientists from Sea to Shore Alliance and Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization confirmed that the manatee, named Washburn, is currently in the waters off of the Bahamas. With a tracking device, they were able to track her journey from Florida to the Bahamas.

This marked the first time the organizations have been able to do so with a manatee. Aquarium officials said on Facebook it is unusual for manatees to travel this far south.

“Our tracking study is investigating where manatees go when they leave Florida and what areas unknown to us are important," Monica Ross, research scientist for Sea to Shore Alliance, said on Facebook. "Washburn is proving to be a particularly interesting manatee for this study; she definitely has us on our toes wondering where she’ll go next.”
