PZC Discusses Wastewater Plant And Drive-In Movies Tonight
The Special Meeting of the Stonington Planning and Zoning Committee begins at 7 p.m.

The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission will address a number of items at tonight’s special meeting including the Mystic wastewater treatment plant and drive-in movies. The regular meeting begins at 7 p.m. at , but the public hearing portion of the meeting does not begin until 7:30 p.m.

The Town of Stonington will seek approval from the pzc for a special use permit and coastal area management review in order to begin construction to upgrade and restore the Mystic wastewater treatment plant at 22 Edgemont St. The town expects to spend $14.2 million to renovate the Mystic plant.
In November of 2010, Stonington voters approved an $18.3 million special obligation bond for the upgrade of the town’s three sewage treatment plants. Upgrading the Edgemont Street plant, built in 1972, was the priority.

In January of 2012, the Stonington from the Water Pollution Control Authority for the upgrade and restoration.
Tonight’s special use permit and coastal area management review applications are part of the public hearing at begins at 7:30 p.m.
Drive-In Movie Theaters
The pzc will discuss a text change that will allow temporary drive-in movie theaters.
“Drive-ins are dinosaurs in today’s world,” pzc commission member John Prue said at the February meeting.
The text change would allow the to submit an application for a temporary drive-in movie theater in July and August.
As part of a new summer series the aquarium wants to show one drive-in movie in April and eight in July and August. According to the aquarium a temporary 40-feet wide movie screen that will be about 20-feet off the ground would be put up on the day of the movie and taken down within the next day. The movie screen will be located in one of their parking lots off of Coogan Boulevard. The aquarium will have to submit a separate application for the April show as a one-time outdoor exhibit.
Other Agenda Items
The pzc will also discuss a number of other items including a variance for construction on a single-family home on River Road in Pawcatuck, an application for a single family home on Pequot Trail and a site plan application and coastal area management review for proposed deck and house additions that are part of the Latimer Point Condominium Association.
The commission will also set the meeting date to interview applicants for the , and Town Attorney Tom Londregan will give an opinion on the municipal athletic field sponsorship panels.
