Seal Recovering After 'Groundbreaking' Surgery: Mystic Aquarium
Mystic Aquarium officials said a Northern Fur Seal is recovering after undergoing a "groundbreaking" procedure.
MYSTIC, CT — Mystic Aquarium officials said a Northern Fur Seal is recovering after undergoing a "groundbreaking" procedure, Fox 61 reported. The beloved animal, Ziggy Star, has been in the aquarium's care for five years.
Ziggy underwent brain surgery on Nov. 20 for treatment of hydrocephalus, or water on the brain, according to Fox 61. The procedure was done at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.
Officials said the surgery was considered groundbreaking, as the procedure is rarely performed on a creature like Ziggy, according to Fox 61. Officials also said Ziggy is now gaining back her strength and appetite, and the aquarium hopes to release her back to the pools soon for visitors to see.
