I've been finding myself spending a lot of time half-watching TV lately. I'm always on my laptop editing pictures or creating wedding albums (my part time gig) or researching property and answering emails (the full time gig), and I have a hard time being in a room with dead. silence.
So the TV always goes on, and I've found that watching something I haven't already seen is just too distracting. I either start watching it, getting engrossed into the show and ignore my work, or I ignore the TV altogether and from time to time I look up and have no clue what's going on feeling lost...like I missed something. Which is why I find myself choosing reruns...oh you know, anything I've seen a million times...pick any movie from the '80's or '90's and there you have it....and tonight's cinematic adventure was the ever popular "Sleepless in Seattle". Seen it, love it, could possibly recite it.
Now for you guys, I'm sure the eyes are rolling here, the movies I pick are typically very "girlie"...so pretend I said something like "Rambo" or "Predator" and you can stomach reading this blog further.
So back to the movie, Sleepless in Seattle...I'm doing the half watch thing, and I came across the scene where Meg Ryan's character is researching out Tom Hank's character and she finds out all sorts of information on her DOS based computer...he's an architect, where he lives, info on his son and on his recently deceased wife ...all things "back in the day" that hardly anyone would have been able to find... because there was no internet and you had to use a detective to get that kind of information. All she had to go on was his name and his son's name, and the name of the city they lived in...really? So no internet, no cell phones, and fax machines were 'high tech'. She was VERY ambitious to obtain information on this poor widowed man. Then I started to wonder...was Meg Ryan's character a hopeless romantic just like the movie depicts her as, or a peak into the world of what now we call an online creeper? I don't mean the folks who click on your picture on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn to see who you are and how they might know you, they may even look at your pictures or read your posts...that type of "research" on someone is now considered normal...I'm talking about the kind of person that stalks you online to get every bit of personal information about you then flies across the country to get a glimpse of you from across the street and starts sending you mail to meet at the Empire State Building on Valentines Day. Yup...she was our very first online creeper. Of course, it IS Meg Ryan (pre-plastic surgery) so we love her anyway. :-)
