Stonington Crew Girls and Boys Novice Win, Team Preps for State Championships

GILL, MA - Stonington Girls and Boys Novice crews won their respective races this weekend against Tabor Academy and event host Northfield Mount Herman. Other Stonington crews earned second-place finishes including the Boys Varsity 1 boat, Boys and Girls Varsity 2 and 3 boats.

The Girls Varsity 1 placed third in good racing conditions on the Connecticut River.

“This is a fun part of the season, especially for novice rowers,” Girls Novice Coach Bruce Yarnall said in a release. “Crews can improve by leaps and bounds. The Novice Girls boat had a good week of training that carried over well to race day.”

“It was a solid day of racing for Stonington,” Head Coach and Boys Varsity Coach Tyler Page said in a release. “Our goal is to peak for the State Championships in May. This weekend’s results, against two very strong programs, are encouraging for us.”

The team will be hosting East Lyme and Guilford next weekend, at the Mystic Seaport. Racing begins at 7:30 am on Sunday, May 7.

“Most boats gained time against crews they have faced previously this season,” Girls Varsity Coach Maria Brown said in a release. “That will serve as motivation over the next few weeks until States.”
