Stonington Group, Westerly Partners Plan America 250 Concert

Historic Stonington and the town's America 250 Committee will present the free concert this weekend.

STONINGTON, CT — Historic Stonington and Stonington’s America 250 Committee will present a free concert celebrating 250 years of American music at the Westerly Armory on Sunday, April 12, at 3 p.m.

The event will also mark the 125th anniversary of the Westerly Armory. The concert is being presented in partnership with the Westerly Armory and the Westerly Band, according to a press release.

The program will include original scores, American folk tunes, patriotic classics and modern pieces including the Star Wars theme and songs by Elvis Presley, according to the announcement.

The Westerly Band has been part of the area’s public life since 1863, entertaining local audiences and marching in cultural and religious processions, festivals and civic parades each year, according to the announcement.

The Westerly Armory was built in 1901 and is one of only 18 historic armories in Rhode Island, according to the announcement. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is identified as a Save America’s Treasures site awarded by the United States Congress.

Historic Stonington said its mission is to preserve, interpret and celebrate the history of all of Stonington. Its collections, properties, programs, publications and educational initiatives are intended to offer multiple perspectives and stories from the past.
