Stonington Looking Into Plastic Bag, Straw Ban: Report

Town officials said they expect to create a committee that would explore the possibility of banning plastic bags and straws in Stonington.

STONINGTON, CT — Town officials said Monday they are planning to create a committee that would talk with local businesses and see if they support banning plastic bags and straws, according to media reports.

According to the New London Day, town selectmen received a request from a resident at a recent meeting that an ad hoc committee be created to figure out how to deal with the issue of plastics in town waters. First Selectman Rob Simmons said he expects a task force to be appointed by selectmen at their July 11 meeting.

Simmons said the task force would also develop an ordinance with the board that could be taken under consideration, according to News 8. A number of businesses in town have already tried to do away with certain plastic products as they can cause problems for Stonington's waters and wildlife.
